On Saturday, April 11 at 2:30pm at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, the Moose Hide Campaign presents “The Power of the Pin,” a showcase of two documentary shorts that reveal how a small square of moose hide has become a recognized catalyst for de-escalation, resilience, and reconciliation across Canada.
The afternoon begins with a traditional opening song and welcome from a local Elder, followed by a high-energy PechaKucha presentation by Campaign Co-founder Paul Lacerte. This fast-paced visual narrative will trace the campaign’s journey from its 2011 origins on the “Highway of Tears” to its current status as a national movement with over seven million pins distributed.
The Tree Remains
Featuring OPP Officer James Reading, this film uses the metaphor of a fallen tree that continues to grow despite being submerged in mud and water. Officer Reading draws a powerful parallel between this natural resilience and the journey of navigating PTSD and occupational trauma, positioning the pin as a symbol of the strength required to “continue growing.”
A Bridge Across
This film documents the experience of Sudbury’s John McIntyre, who, while wearing his moose hide pin, found himself facing an agitated, armed stranger. Upon seeing the pin—a universal symbol of non-violence—the stranger’s demeanor shifted instantly, allowing for a peaceful resolution.
Post-Screening Q&A
Following the films, a live Q&A will feature the film directors alongside John McIntyre and Officer James Reading, highlighting the human stories and the professional impact of the movement’s symbol.

Looking Ahead to May 14 in Toronto.
This cinematic event is the precursor to a major national milestone: Moose Hide Campaign Day (May 14). For the first time since its inception, the campaign’s signature ceremony will be held outside of Victoria, with Queen’s Park serving as the new national anchor. This year, the campaign moves beyond “taking action” to a deeper invitation: “Join Us In Ceremony.”
